In the box

A 17 x 17 in (43 x 43 cm) canvas printed with the design in color, pre-cut yarn bundled by color, a numbered color card and a latch hook.

Materials and care

Pre-cut yarn knotted into a mesh canvas. The pile is dense and hard-wearing: shake it out or vacuum it on a low setting, spot clean with a damp cloth and mild soap, and let it dry flat.

Before you start

Lay the canvas on a table with the bottom edge toward you and leave a few rows of bare mesh at every edge for finishing. Open one color bundle at a time and keep the rest in their bags so the numbers stay together.

About the designs

Every design fills the whole canvas with one generous bloom or a tumble of flowers, so the finished pillow reads from across the room. The pile softens the edges of the petals and gives the colors a velvety depth that flat fabric never has. Choose from:

  • Roses: Rose bouquet with a deep red border, Crimson rose, Yellow rose, Purple rose and Blue rose.
  • Poppies: Poppies and daisies, Poppy field, Red poppies and a single Orange poppy.
  • Summer blooms: Sunflower, Sunflowers, Pink dahlia, Fire dahlia, Peony, Purple anemone, Tulip, Daffodils, Pansies and Frangipani.
  • With wings: Coneflower and butterfly, Red butterfly, Robin in daisies and Hummingbird.

The bold single flowers, such as the Sunflower, the Tulip or the roses, have large areas of one color and come together quickly. The meadow scenes mix more colors in smaller patches and take a little longer.

How latch hook works

Fold a piece of yarn in half around the shaft of the hook, just below the latch. Push the hook down through one square of the canvas and up through the square above it, so it passes under a single thread. Lay both yarn ends into the hook, pull it back toward you and the latch closes, drawing the ends through the loop. A gentle tug on the ends tightens the knot. That one movement is the whole craft.

Each square takes one knot in the color printed on it, so there is nothing to count. Work across the canvas row by row, starting at the bottom, so the finished pile lies away from the row you are working on.

What is in the kit

  • A 17 x 17 in (43 x 43 cm) canvas with the design printed on it in color
  • Pre-cut yarn, bundled and numbered by color
  • A color card that matches each number to its yarn
  • A latch hook

Because the design is printed on the canvas in color, you always know which bundle comes next. Match the printed color to the number on the card, and knot.

Finishing the pillow

The kit makes the hooked front. To turn it into a pillow, fold the bare mesh at the edges to the back, sew the front to a square of cotton, velvet or felt and slip in a 17 in (43 cm) insert; the back fabric and the insert are not included. You can also bind the edges with rug tape and use it as a small mat, or stitch a sleeve to the back and hang it on a dowel.

How long it takes

Expect about 12 to 25 hours for a 17 x 17 in (43 x 43 cm) canvas. Busy designs with many color changes sit at the top of that range, and your first rows will be slower than your last. The knot is easy to pick up again after a break, so it suits half an hour in front of the TV as well as a long weekend afternoon.

Delivery and returns

Delivery is $6.95, and free on orders from $49. The delivery estimate for your address shows on this page and at checkout. Questions

Do I need any experience?

No. Latch hook is a single knot repeated across the canvas, and the design is printed on the mesh in color, so there is no chart to follow and nothing to count. Most people have the knot down within a few minutes.

Is the pillow insert included?

No. The kit makes the hooked front of the pillow. Sew it to a square of cotton, velvet or felt and add a 17 in (43 cm) insert, or bind the edges and use it as a mat or a wall hanging.

Which design is quickest?

The single big blooms with large areas of one color: the Sunflower, the Tulip, the Yellow rose and the Blue rose. The meadow scenes, like Poppies and daisies, have more color changes and take a little longer.
