How counted cross stitch works

Counted cross stitch builds a picture from tiny crosses on Aida, a cotton fabric woven in a grid of squares. Nothing is printed on the fabric. You follow a chart where every square holds a symbol for one floss color, count across the grid, and stitch one x per square. The first few evenings go into finding the rhythm of counting; after that the picture grows almost by itself.

Every kit here is full cross stitch from a symbol chart, and the floss comes sorted onto a numbered card, so you can match each symbol to its color without guessing.

What each kit contains

  • Unprinted Aida fabric, 100% cotton
  • Cotton floss, sorted on a numbered card
  • A printed symbol chart and instructions
  • A needle

Hoops, scissors and frames are not included. The fabric is folded in the pack: press out the creases from the back with a warm iron before your first stitch. Any 8 to 10 in (20 to 25 cm) hoop or a small scroll frame keeps the fabric taut while you work.

14-count or 18-count

The count is the number of squares per inch. 14-count Aida has larger squares, so it is easier to see and to count, and the finished piece is bigger. 18-count fits more squares into each inch, which makes the same chart about a fifth smaller, with finer and denser stitches. The stitch count and the hours stay the same, so pick 14-count unless you want a smaller piece or already enjoy fine work. Several kits offer both; the rest come on 14-count.

How we estimate the hours

We work each estimate out from the chart: its size in stitches, how much of the fabric is actually stitched, and a typical pace of 100 to 150 stitches an hour with thread changes included. A bouquet on navy fabric comes out around 60 to 90 hours, a dense square scene closer to 100 to 140, and the large house samplers run past 200. These are long projects by design: an hour or two in the evening carries a kit through a season. Stitch faster and you finish sooner.

Dark fabric or light fabric

Black and navy Aida make bright colors glow, which suits the forest, flower panel and bouquet kits. The trade-off is that the holes are harder to see, so stitch by a daylight lamp or lay something pale across your lap. Sky blue, cream and flax fabrics are easier on the eyes and leave the background unstitched as part of the picture, which is why the samplers and the goldfinch kit use them.

Which kit to start with

For a first counted piece, start with the Goldfinch Sampler: light fabric, 14-count and solid blocks of color. Once counting feels easy, the Chamomile Bouquet and the Mushroom Forest are the natural next step. The flower panels, the world map and the house samplers reward a stitcher who already enjoys long projects.

Questions

Which kit should I start with?

First-timer: Goldfinch Sampler. A little practice: Chamomile Bouquet, Mushroom Forest, October Folk Tale, Animal World Map, Tall Flower Panel and the two house samplers.

Is the design printed on the fabric?

No. These are counted kits: the Aida is plain and you stitch from a printed symbol chart. There are no printed lines to cover and nothing to wash out when you finish.

What else do I need?

A hoop or scroll frame, small sharp scissors and good light. The fabric, the sorted floss, the chart and the needle are all in the box.

How long does a kit take?

From about 60 to 280 hours, worked out from each chart at 100 to 150 stitches an hour. Every kit page shows its own estimate and stitch count, and you can stop and start whenever you like.

Should I pick 14-count or 18-count?

14-count is easier to see and finishes larger. 18-count makes the same design about a fifth smaller with finer stitches. The chart and the hours do not change.
