What hand embroidery is like

Embroidery is drawing with thread. The design is printed on the fabric, you stretch it in a hoop, and you fill the shapes with a few simple stitches: satin stitch for smooth color, long and short stitch for shading, back stitch for lines and French knots for dots and texture. It is quiet, portable and endlessly forgiving, because a stitch you don't like comes out in seconds.

Two kinds of kit

Some of our kits are a single motif on black fabric, like the Moon and Moth, Garden Bugs and Mushroom Forest designs. The black ground makes every color glow, and the open space around the motif keeps them quick: a good place to start.

The others are full pictures stitched edge to edge in raised, textured stitches: the Blue Door Cottage, the Lemon Tree House, Window to the Sea, the Pansy Teacup and the landscapes. They take longer and reward you with a piece that looks almost painted.

What comes in a kit

Every kit includes the printed fabric, embroidery floss in all the colors the design needs and a hoop, and some include needles too. Each kit page lists exactly what is in the box.

Choosing a size

A 6 in (15 cm) hoop suits a shelf or a small wall and is the quicker project. An 8 in (20 cm) hoop has more room for detail and makes more of a statement. Fully stitched designs take longer than their size suggests, so check the time on each kit before you choose.

Finishing your hoop

When you finish, trim the fabric about an inch (2.5 cm) beyond the hoop, gather it at the back and cover it with a circle of felt. The hoop hangs from its own screw, or you can frame the piece instead.

Delivery and returns

US delivery takes 7 to 14 days, and each kit page shows its own estimate. Delivery is $6.95, free on orders from $49, and you can return a kit within 30 days of delivery. See delivery and returns for the details.

Questions

Which embroidery kit is best for a beginner?

One of the black fabric designs: Moon and Moth, Garden Bugs or Mushroom Forest. Each is a single motif with open space around it, and they take about 8 to 15 hours.

What do I need besides the kit?

Small sharp scissors, plus an embroidery needle for the kits that don't include one. The fabric, floss and hoop are in every kit, and each kit page lists exactly what is included.

How long does an embroidery kit take?

About 8 to 12 hours for a single motif in an 8 in (20 cm) hoop, and 10 to 25 hours for the fully stitched pictures, depending on size and how dense the design is.

Can I frame my embroidery instead of using the hoop?

Yes. Lace the finished fabric over card and set it in a deep picture frame, or leave out the glass so the raised stitches are not flattened.
