What punch needle is

Punch needle is a loop-pile craft: you push a hollow needle threaded with yarn through a stretched cloth, and each punch leaves a small loop on the front. Row after row, the loops build a soft, rug-like surface. There is one motion to learn and nothing to count, which makes it one of the easiest crafts to pick up.

Why coasters

A coaster is the perfect first project. It is small enough to finish in one sitting, the shapes are simple, and when you are done you have something useful for the coffee table. Every kit here makes a set of six, so by the last one you will have the technique down.

Choosing a set

The Abstract Landscape kit is the easiest: round coasters filled with wide, wavy bands of color. The Flower and Fruit and Treats kits are bright and playful, and the Cat, Dog and Frogs and Smileys kits make shaped coasters with little faces.

What is in every kit

Six squares of cloth printed with the designs, yarn in every color, a punch needle and threader, an embroidery hoop, thread snips, six adhesive felt backs, a color reference picture and instructions. You don't need anything else.

How long it takes

About 30 minutes to an hour per coaster, so 3 to 6 hours for a set of six. The first one is the slowest; after that you settle into a rhythm.

Finishing

When a coaster is filled, trim the cloth around it, press an adhesive felt back onto the reverse and trim any felt that shows. The felt covers the back of the stitches and gives the coaster a flat, neat base.

Questions

Is punch needle hard to learn?

No. There is one motion: push the needle down, lift it just clear of the cloth, slide it along and push again. Most people get the hang of it within the first coaster.

What do I need besides the kit?

Nothing. Every kit includes the printed cloth, yarn, needle, threader, hoop, snips and felt backs, plus a color reference picture and instructions.

How long does a set of coasters take?

About 30 minutes to an hour per coaster, so 3 to 6 hours for the set of six. Each coaster can be finished in one sitting.

How do I clean punch needle coasters?

Blot spills straight away and spot clean with a damp cloth. Don't machine wash them, because the felt backs are stuck on rather than sewn.
