Ladybugs, bees and dragonflies
$27.95
Stitch a garden insect ringed by daisies, leaves and wildflowers on printed black cotton like a page from an old nature journal. Includes the printed fabric, floss, hoop and instructions.
Expected delivery Fri, Nov 6 to Wed, Nov 11
Black cotton fabric printed with the design, embroidery floss in every color, an 8 in (20 cm) hoop and instructions in English.
Cotton fabric and embroidery floss. Once it is stitched, keep the piece out of strong sun so the colors stay bright, and dust it with a soft brush. If it needs a clean, rinse it by hand in cool water and let it dry flat.
Sort the floss by color before you start and keep each color with its label. Work in good light: a lamp over your shoulder makes the printed lines on black fabric much easier to follow.

Each design puts one insect at the center of a ring of daisies, leaves and wildflowers, and three of them add a crescent moon and a star above it. Hung as a set, they look like pages from an old nature journal. Choose from:
The Ladybug is the simplest, with one big red shape and clean black spots. The Dragonfly is mostly fine lines, and the two moths have the most color blending.
You can work the whole picture with a handful of classic stitches. Satin stitch fills small shapes like petals and the stripes on a bee. Long and short stitch blends one shade into the next across a wing or a mushroom cap, which is what gives these designs their soft, painted look. Back stitch and stem stitch draw stems, antennae and fine lines, and French knots add pollen, berries and stars.
Split the floss into two or three strands for fills and use a single strand for the finest details. Keep your stitches short on curves, and work from the back of a shape to the front so the top layers sit neatly over the ones behind.
You will also need small sharp scissors and an embroidery needle.
Most people finish in about 8 to 12 hours. The daisies are quick, repetitive and relaxing; the insect in the middle is where you slow down and take your time.
When the last stitch is in, tighten the hoop, trim the fabric to about an inch (2.5 cm) beyond the frame and run a gathering stitch around the edge to pull it to the back. A circle of felt over the back makes it neat. The hoop hangs from its own screw, leans happily on a shelf, or can go into a picture frame. For a larger wall arrangement, pair one or two of these with the Moon and Moth kit, which uses the same black fabric and the same size hoop.
Delivery is $6.95, and free on orders from $49. The delivery estimate for your address shows on this page and at checkout. You can return the kit within 30 days of delivery; return shipping is yours unless it arrives faulty or wrong. See delivery and returns for the details, or compare the other embroidery kits.
Yes. Each design is one motif and a wreath, and the stitches are the basic ones every beginner learns first. Start with the Ladybug if you want a quick, satisfying first piece.
Small sharp scissors and an embroidery needle. The printed fabric, the floss, the 8 in (20 cm) hoop and the instructions are in the kit.
Hang it from the screw at the top of the hoop on a small nail or a ribbon loop. Trim the fabric at the back and cover it with a circle of felt for a tidy finish.
