Colorful houses and fishing boats
$27.95
Terracotta-roofed houses in pink, yellow and orange climb a green hillside above wooden boats on a blue harbor, stitched edge to edge in a 6 in hoop.
Expected delivery Thu, Nov 5 to Wed, Nov 11
Cotton fabric printed with the design, embroidery floss in every color on a thread card and a 6 in (15 cm) hoop.
Cotton fabric and embroidery floss. Once it is stitched, keep the piece out of strong sun so the colors stay bright, and dust it with a soft brush. If it needs a clean, rinse it by hand in cool water and let it dry flat.
Don't wash or iron the fabric before you start. Center the design in the hoop and tighten it until the fabric is drum tight, then sort the floss on its card so every color is easy to find.

Houses with terracotta roofs crowd the hillside, painted in pink, cream, yellow and orange, with dark green trees between them. Below, the harbor wall curves around blue water full of reflections, and small wooden boats in red, white and blue float in the foreground. It is a cheerful, sunny picture with a lot of color packed into a small circle.
This kit is the 6 in (15 cm) version of the design. The photos show the same picture stitched in a larger hoop, so expect the same scene with a little less room for tiny details.
The fabric is covered edge to edge, so this is a project about filling rather than outlining. Long and short stitch builds the shaded areas, satin stitch makes the smooth, glossy shapes, and French knots and short straight stitches add texture where the design calls for it. Because every area is filled, small wobbles disappear into the surrounding stitches, which makes the finished piece forgiving.
Work the background areas first and the details that sit on top last. Two or three strands of floss cover the fabric quickly; switch to a single strand for eyes, edges and highlights.
The houses are small blocks of satin stitch, which makes them satisfying to fill one at a time. The water is worked in horizontal stitches in several blues, with white highlights added on top for the ripples.
You will also need small sharp scissors and an embroidery needle.
About 10 to 18 hours. There are many small color changes in the houses, so keep the thread card close and work one color across several houses before you switch.
The printed lines are made to rinse out: once you finish, rinse the piece in clean water and let it dry flat, and any line that still peeks between stitches is gone. Then put it back in the hoop, trim the fabric to about an inch (2.5 cm) beyond the frame and gather it at the back, or frame it behind glass.
It makes a bright pair with Window to the Sea, or a trio with the Lemon Tree House.
Delivery is $6.95, and free on orders from $49. The delivery estimate for your address shows on this page and at checkout. You can return the kit within 30 days of delivery; return shipping is yours unless it arrives faulty or wrong. See delivery and returns for the details, or compare the other embroidery kits.
The picture is the same, but this kit is the 6 in (15 cm) version, while the photos show it in a larger hoop. The finished piece is about 6 in across.
Leave the floss on its thread card and only cut a length when you need it. Working one color across all the houses that use it saves a lot of rethreading.
No. Rinse the finished piece in clean water and the printed lines wash out. Don't wash or iron the fabric before you start.
