Cotton fabric printed with the design, embroidery floss in every color on a thread card and a 6 in (15 cm) hoop.

Materials and care

Cotton fabric and embroidery floss. Once it is stitched, keep the piece out of strong sun so the colors stay bright, and dust it with a soft brush. If it needs a clean, rinse it by hand in cool water and let it dry flat.

Before you start

Don't wash or iron the fabric before you start. Center the design in the hoop and tighten it until the fabric is drum tight, then sort the floss on its card so every color is easy to find.

About the design

The mountain rises in the center in layers of white, ice blue and slate, its snow streaked down the slopes. A dark cherry branch arches over it from the right, covered in magenta and pink blossom, and the foot of the picture is a bank of pale pink and lilac blossom against deep purple hills. The sky fades from blush pink to cream. It is a calm, classic scene, with a palette of pinks, purples and blues that looks lovely on a pale wall.

This kit is the 6 in (15 cm) version of the design. The photos show the same picture stitched in a larger hoop, so expect the same scene a little smaller.

Stitches you will use

The fabric is covered edge to edge, so this is a project about filling rather than outlining. Long and short stitch builds the shaded areas, satin stitch makes the smooth, glossy shapes, and French knots and short straight stitches add texture where the design calls for it. Because every area is filled, small wobbles disappear into the surrounding stitches, which makes the finished piece forgiving.

Work the background areas first and the details that sit on top last. Two or three strands of floss cover the fabric quickly; switch to a single strand for eyes, edges and highlights.

The mountain is long, straight stitches following the slope, which goes quickly and looks great. The blossom is built from French knots and tiny lazy daisy petals, so that part is slow and very pretty.

What is in the kit

  • Cotton fabric printed with the design
  • Embroidery floss in every color, wound on a thread card
  • A 6 in (15 cm) embroidery hoop

You will also need small sharp scissors and an embroidery needle.

How long it takes

About 10 to 18 hours. Most of that is the blossom; the sky and the mountain take a few evenings at most.

Finishing and display

The printed lines are made to rinse out: once you finish, rinse the piece in clean water and let it dry flat, and any line that still peeks between stitches is gone. Then put it back in the hoop, trim the fabric to about an inch (2.5 cm) beyond the frame and gather it at the back, or frame it behind glass.

If you love landscapes, the Valley Landscape kit has more textured scenes in the same size.

Questions

Is the kit the same size as the photos?

The design is the same, but this kit is the 6 in (15 cm) version and the photos show it in a larger hoop. The finished piece is about 6 in across.

How is the blossom stitched?

With clusters of French knots and small lazy daisy petals in several pinks. Mixing two shades in the needle gives the blossom a soft, natural variation.

What do I need besides the kit?

Small sharp scissors and an embroidery needle. The printed fabric, all the floss on a thread card and the 6 in (15 cm) hoop are in the kit.
