A numbered canvas, numbered pots of acrylic paint, three brushes, four wooden stretcher bars with nails, two hanging hooks and a printed reference picture.

Materials and care

Printed canvas, acrylic paint and wooden stretcher bars. Let the painting dry for a day before you hang it, dust it with a soft dry cloth and keep it out of strong direct sun. Close each pot tightly between sessions so the paint stays soft.

Before you start

Slot the stretcher bars together, wrap the canvas around them and fix it along the back with the nails, so you paint on a taut surface. Keep a cup of water and a paper towel at hand, and rinse the brush between colors.

About the designs

Pink blossom against deep blue runs through every design, with the snowy cone of Mount Fuji somewhere in each view.

  • Sakura street: a long street of old wooden houses and shop fronts under cherry trees in full bloom, with Fuji at the end of the road.
  • Lantern alley: a narrow alley at dusk, paper lanterns glowing on the walls and pink blossom overhead.
  • Fuji village: tiled roofs climbing a hillside under cherry branches, with Fuji rising behind.
  • Lantern river: a river between banks of blossom at twilight, lanterns floating on the water and a small boat in the middle.
  • Night river: the same river later in the evening, the lanterns brighter and their light doubled in the water.

The night scenes have the most drama, with warm lantern light against cool blues and purples. The street and village views are brighter and a little quicker to paint. All of them look striking at the largest size, where the blossom turns into a soft cloud of pinks.

How it works

Every area of the canvas is outlined and printed with a small number, and every pot of paint carries the number it belongs to. Open one pot, fill all the areas with that number, close it and move on to the next. There is nothing to draw and nothing to mix; the picture appears color by color until the last numbers are covered. Acrylic dries in minutes, so you can carry on with the next area almost straight away.

Sizes and the frame

Every size comes with a wooden stretcher frame: four bars that slot together at the corners, and small nails to fix the canvas around the back edge. Once the canvas is mounted, the painting hangs on the two hooks in the box with no picture frame needed. The canvas travels folded or rolled, and the creases relax once it is stretched.

How long it takes

  • 16 x 20 in (40 x 50 cm): about 12 to 20 hours
  • 20 x 26 in (50 x 65 cm): about 18 to 30 hours
  • 24 x 30 in (60 x 75 cm): about 25 to 40 hours

Times count hands-on painting and depend on how carefully you work the edges. A kit keeps for months between sessions as long as the pots stay closed.

What is in the kit

  • A canvas printed with the numbered outline of the design
  • Numbered pots of acrylic paint for every color in the picture
  • Three brushes, from fine to wide
  • Four wooden stretcher bars and small nails to mount the canvas
  • Two hooks for hanging
  • A printed reference picture

Tips for a clean finish

  • Start with the darkest colors and the biggest areas; they set the picture quickly.
  • Use the fine brush for edges and small areas, and the wide brush for sky, water and walls.
  • Two thin coats cover better than one thick one and hide any number under a pale color.
  • Blot the brush on a paper towel after rinsing so no water drips into the pots.
  • Close every pot tightly; dry paint is the main reason a kit runs short.

Questions

Which size should I choose?

16 x 20 in (40 x 50 cm) is the quickest, at about 12 to 20 hours. 20 x 26 in (50 x 65 cm) and 24 x 30 in (60 x 75 cm) take longer, up to about 25 to 40 hours, but have bigger areas to fill and suit a larger wall.

Is the frame included?

Yes. Every size comes with four wooden stretcher bars and small nails. Slot the bars together, wrap the canvas around them and fix it at the back; the painting then hangs on the two hooks in the box, no picture frame needed.

Which design is the easiest?

Sakura street and Fuji village have larger areas of sky and blossom. The two river scenes have the most small lights and reflections, so they take longer and reward a steady hand with the fine brush.
