What these needles are

These are double pointed needles, often called DPNs. Each needle has a point at both ends, which lets you knit a small tube in the round without a cable. The set is made of stainless steel with a smooth surface that lets stitches slide easily from one needle to the next.

Each bag holds five needles. Five is the common count for working a small circumference, because you spread your stitches over four needles and use the fifth to knit. That makes this a ready-to-use set for socks, mittens, baby hats, sleeve cuffs and other small projects.

Sizes and length

Every needle in this listing is 7.9 in (20 cm) long. The size refers to the diameter of the needle, which sets your stitch gauge. Pick the size your pattern calls for, or the size that gives you the fabric you want with your chosen yarn.

Size Length Pack
0.08 in (2.0 mm) 7.9 in (20 cm) 5 needles per bag
0.10 in (2.5 mm) 7.9 in (20 cm) 5 needles per bag
0.12 in (3.0 mm) 7.9 in (20 cm) 5 needles per bag
0.14 in (3.5 mm) 7.9 in (20 cm) 5 needles per bag
0.16 in (4.0 mm) 7.9 in (20 cm) 5 needles per bag
0.18 in (4.5 mm) 7.9 in (20 cm) 5 needles per bag
0.20 in (5.0 mm) 7.9 in (20 cm) 5 needles per bag

Smaller sizes suit fine yarn and tight gauges, such as sock yarn on 0.08 in (2.0 mm) to 0.12 in (3.0 mm) needles. Larger sizes suit worsted and bulky yarns, such as 0.18 in (4.5 mm) and 0.20 in (5.0 mm) for hats and mittens. If you are not sure, check the yarn label and your pattern first.

How to use double pointed needles

Cast on the number of stitches your pattern gives. Slip the stitches evenly across four needles, then join in the round with the fifth needle. Take care not to twist the cast-on edge before you join. Place a marker at the join so you can track the start of each round.

As you work, you knit off one needle with the next empty one. When a needle empties, it becomes your working needle. This rotation keeps the tube moving and spreads the weight of the work. The double points at both ends mean you can knit from either side, which helps when you turn heels or shape small openings.

For very small stitch counts, you can also spread the stitches over three needles and knit with the fourth. The five-needle pack gives you that option and a spare.

Choosing a size

Match the needle size to the gauge in your pattern. Gauge is the number of stitches and rows per inch, and it decides whether your finished piece fits. If your gauge is loose, go down a size. If it is tight, go up a size.

A common starting point:

  • 0.08 in (2.0 mm) to 0.10 in (2.5 mm): fine sock yarn, lace weight, delicate cuffs
  • 0.12 in (3.0 mm) to 0.14 in (3.5 mm): light yarn, socks, baby items, fine mittens
  • 0.16 in (4.0 mm) to 0.18 in (4.5 mm): medium yarn, hats, mittens, sleeves
  • 0.20 in (5.0 mm): worsted and bulky yarn, warm hats, thick mittens

These are starting points, not rules. Your yarn, your hands and your pattern decide the final size.

Care and storage

Stainless steel needles are durable and resist rust. Wipe them with a dry or slightly damp cloth after use, then dry them fully before you put them away. Keep them in the bag they arrive in, or in a needle case, so the points stay protected and the sizes stay together.

If your stitches feel sticky, check that your hands are clean and dry. A light wipe of the needles usually restores the smooth glide. Store each size in its own bag or slot so you can find the right pair quickly for your next project.

Questions

How many needles come in one bag?

Each bag holds 5 needles. That is enough to spread stitches over four needles and knit with the fifth, with one spare.

What sizes can I choose from?

The sizes are 0.08 in (2.0 mm), 0.10 in (2.5 mm), 0.12 in (3.0 mm), 0.14 in (3.5 mm), 0.16 in (4.0 mm), 0.18 in (4.5 mm) and 0.20 in (5.0 mm). Pick the size your pattern calls for.
