About the design

The chart is a sampler: small motifs arranged in rows and blocks rather than one scene. Goldfinches with red faces and yellow wing bars perch and fly between purple thistles, a branch of red rose hips, ears of wheat and green folk-style leaves. A pair of goldfinches guards a nest of white eggs, and a green wreath, clover knots and a scrolling brown border tie the rows together. The sky blue fabric is left unstitched as the background, so the birds stand out without any filling in.

Fabric, count and finished size

The kit uses 14-count sky blue Aida and finishes at 11 x 13 in (28 x 33 cm). The squares are easy to see on the pale fabric, which is why we point first-timers here. Each motif uses a handful of colors in solid blocks, so you spend your evenings stitching rather than changing thread.

How long it takes

The chart is about 154 by 182 stitches, and around two fifths of it is stitched: roughly 11,000 crosses. At a typical 100 to 150 stitches an hour, that is about 75 to 110 hours. Because the motifs are separate, every bird or nest you finish feels like a small win, and it is easy to stop at the end of one and come back to the next.

Stitching tips

Start with the nest, a small closed motif that teaches you to read the chart. Keep every top stitch crossing the same way, and carry thread no more than three squares across the back between motifs; on pale fabric, longer jumps can show through.

What is in the kit

  • Unprinted Aida fabric, 100% cotton
  • Cotton floss, sorted on a numbered card
  • A printed symbol chart and instructions
  • A needle

A hoop, scissors and a frame are not included. Press the folded fabric from the back before you start, then find the center of both the fabric and the chart and work outward. A 12 x 16 in (30 x 40 cm) frame leaves room for a margin.

Questions

Is this a good first cross stitch kit?

Yes. The pale fabric makes the grid easy to read, the motifs are solid blocks of color in full crosses, and each bird or nest is a small section you can finish in a sitting or two.

Do I have to stitch the background?

No. The sky blue Aida is the background, so you only stitch the birds, nests, flowers and borders. That is a big part of why the hours stay reasonable for the size.

How long does it take?

About 75 to 110 hours for roughly 11,000 stitches at 100 to 150 stitches an hour. Beginners often start nearer the slower end and speed up as they go.
